Item # 695310

June 15, 1861

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, June 15, 1861

* Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
* Confederates evacuation
* Prelude to Battle of Bull's Run

The format of this title at this time was advertisements on the front page with the wealth of Civil War reporting on inside pages.
A feature of this issue is the nice & detailed back page map headed: "Harper's Ferry And The Region Round About." Column heads includes: "Harper's Ferry Evacuated" "The Rebels March Towards Manassas" "The War for the Union" "More Railroad Bridges Burned" "Movements of Missouri Troops" "Retreat of Jackson and his Officials" "Traitors In the Departments" and more.
Eight pages, various folds and creases seem to disfigure some, irregular at the spine, minor margin wear.

AI notes: In June 1861, Confederate forces under General Joseph E. Johnston evacuated Harpers Ferry, recognizing the town’s vulnerable position in a deep valley surrounded by higher ground. Although the Confederacy had held the area since April, Johnston deemed it indefensible against a potential Union assault. Between June 13–15, Confederate troops withdrew toward Winchester, Virginia, after destroying bridges, railroads, and remaining military equipment to prevent their use by Union forces. This strategic retreat preserved Confederate strength for later engagements, including the First Battle of Bull Run.
