Apparently an "Extra" edition of the Allegany Freeman...

Item # 694985

August 24, 1816

FREEMAN EXTRA, August 24, 1816

* Very rare & early 18th century publication
* Cumberland, Allegheny County, Maryland

This is a single sheet, broadsheet (printed on both sides) extra edition, with no mention of city or state.
Given that most of the front page is taken up with a lengthy letter: "To the People of Maryland", and all of the back page is: "A PLAIN HISTORY Addressed to the Tenants, Overseers, Laborers, Artisans, Manufacturers, and Mechanics...of the State of Maryland", I am making the presumption that this newspaper is from Maryland.
In researching Maryland newspapers with "Freeman" in the title, just one fits: "The Allegany Freeman" from Cumberland, which existed from 1813 thru 1818. Plus, a bit on the front page mentions a portion of an essay: "...the conduct of the Federal Party in our State Legislature, on the subject of General Suffrage, the Allegany Fraud...". This mention of "Allegany" gives more credence to this being an extra edition of the "Allegany Freeman".
A very rare paper as such, as only two institutions have any holdings, totaling just 5 issues, this date not being among them. Very nice condition with two small binding holes at the blank spine.
