Item # 694506

July 24, 1798

THE SALEM GAZETTE, Massachusetts, July 24, 1798

* President George Washington
* re. commanding American armies

Most of the front page is taken up with: "Laws Of the United States" including several Acts of Congress including: "Supplementary to an act...to establish an uniform rule of Naturalization..." and: "Supplementary to...An Act authorizing the President of the United States to Raise a Provisional army." and: "to amend the Act..,.to authorize the President...to cause to be purchased or built, a number of small vessels to be equipped as allies or otherwise."
Page 2 begins with a lengthy document signed by: John Adams as President, authorizing the ambassador from France, with related discussion.
Page 3 has reports headed: "United States of America" which begins with a notable item: "Highly Important" "From an authentic source we are assured that Gen. WASHINGTON will accept of his appointment of Lt. General and Commander in Chief of the armies of the U.S.".
As for this latter report, Washington accepted the position and served as the senior officer of the U.S. Army from July 13, 1798 until his death seventeen months later. He participated in the planning for a provisional army to meet any emergency that might arise, but avoided involvement in details as much as possible; he delegated most of the work, including leadership of the army, to Hamilton.
Four pages, very nice condition.
