February 03, 1865

DAILY EXAMINER, Richmond, Feb. 3, 1865

* General Robert E. Lee
* Commander-in-Chief
* Confederate capital

Not only a nice Confederate newspaper but one from the capital of the Confederacy as well. And from the closing months of the war.
The front page has: "The War News" which begins by commenting on Robert E. Lee being named commander-in-chief: "We hear from all parts of the Richmond lines that the appointment of General Lee to the command of all the armies of the Confederacy has been the cause of great reanimation in the army, which is likely to be reflected over the country..." with more.
Also on the front page are items with small heads: "A New Order From General Sherman" "Important From Arkansas--Kirby Smith to Join Maximilian" and a dispatch from the "Headquarters Army Northern Virginia" to: "Arm and equip an additional force of Cavalry..." which is signed in type: R. E. Lee, General.
The back page has a lengthy editorial with discussion of several topics, one discussion point begins: "The enemy's present plan of campaign is obvious. It seeks to keep up the pressure upon Richmond and to chain the army of Northern Virginia to its breastworks..." with much more.
I always find it interesting how upbeat their editorial were during the declining months of the Confederacy.
Also on the back page: "Latest News From the North" "The Virginia Legislature" and much reporting from the: "Confederate States Congress".
Single sheet with a one column masthead (typical near the end of the war), never bound nor trimmed, very nice, clean condition.
