NEW YORK OBSERVER--Secular Department, Nov. 6, 1856  Page 2 begins with a report which takes most of the first column: "The Presidential Election" with various reports from cities and states. The text begins: "The election is over, and although at this moment the returns are not yet received from the whole country, it is conceded on all hands, in this city, that Fremont is not elected...". Indeed, James Buchanan would win.
