AI notes: The Battle of Rich Mountain took place on July 11, 1861, in what is now West Virginia, and was one of the early battles of the American Civil War. Union forces under Brigadier General William S. Rosecrans attacked and defeated a smaller Confederate force led by Lieutenant Colonel John Pegram, which was defending a strategic mountain pass. The Union victory helped secure western Virginia for the North, leading to the eventual creation of the state of West Virginia in 1863. Pegram was forced to surrender with many of his men, marking one of the first significant Union triumphs in the war.
