Page 5 has several columns with reports on Narcisco Lopez and his failed attempt to liberate Cuba from Spanish rule.
Lopez was a Venezuelan-born adventurer and Spanish Army general who is best known for his expeditions aimed at liberating Cuba. His troops carried a flag that López had designed, which later became the flag of Cuba. Following his final failed attempt he was captured and garroted in Havana.
The article provides much detail as taken from other newspapers as well. It is prefaced with: "They announce the complete defeat of the expedition under General Lopez, who had been captured, brought to Savannah, and garroted, while a number of his followers had perished and the remainder were in the hands of the Spine authorities awaiting sentence of death."
