AI notes: In May 1863, Union General Ulysses S. Grant began the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, after pushing Confederate forces under General John C. Pemberton into the city through a series of battles. Following two failed assaults on May 19 and 22, Grant settled into a siege strategy, surrounding the city and cutting off all supplies. The prolonged bombardment and starvation wore down the Confederate defenders and civilians alike. After over 40 days under siege, Pemberton surrendered on July 4, 1863, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River and marking a major turning point in the Civil War.
