background: On April 4, 1861, the United States was on the brink of civil war, just days before the conflict officially began. Tensions between the Northern states (Union) and the Southern states (Confederacy) were at a breaking point following the secession of several Southern states after Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860. By early April 1861, seven Southern states had already declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America. The immediate crisis centered around the federal fort at Charleston Harbor, South Carolina—Fort Sumter. President Lincoln was deciding how to respond to the Confederacy's demands to surrender the fort. The standoff created intense national anxiety as both sides prepared for a possible military clash. This crisis would culminate just three days later, on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter, marking the official start of the Civil War.
