Creating the Naval Academy at Annapolis... Arresting Brigham Young...

Item # 690170

January 31, 1846

NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, Jan. 31, 1846

* United States Naval Academy is born
* Brigham Young arrested - Mormons

Near the back is a nice article on the establishment of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, headed: "The Naval School At Annapolis", which includes: "It is generally understood that in September last the military post at Annapolis, Md., was vacated by the garrison & transferred from the jurisdiction of the war to that of the navy department, to be occupied as a naval school..." and further on it listed the administrators, structure, classes, etc., including: "The school, under the superintendence of Commander Franklin Buchanan, organized on Friday the 10th of October..." and more, all taking half of the page.
The back page includes: "Mormon Difficulties still continue to distract the state of Illinois...went to Nauvoo to arrest Brigham Young, one of the 'twelve', and a leading Saint, indicted for counterfeiting the U. States coin..." and more.
Also a report headed: "A Capture--A Supposed Slaver" with some details.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, a bit of dirtiness to the front page, very nice condition.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
