Item # 689735

August 16, 1729

THE NORWICH GAZETTE, England, Aug. 16, 1729

* Rare 18th century publication
* Great masthead engraving

See the photos for the tremendous detail in the masthead of this early newspaper, showing the skyline of Norwich. Individual buildings and even the windows can be seen in this woodblock engraving. There are insets in the upper corners as well, one showing the patron Saint George slaying a dragon.
Page 3 has a report: "A Sloop bound from Jamaica with 180 Negroes & a very valuable cargo, by firing a gun took fire in the harbour and blew up...the vessel, cargo, and crew...were lost. But about 40 Negroes were taken up alive, tho' in a miserable condition...".
Four pages, 8 1/4 by 10 1/4 inches, red tax stamp in a lower corner, very nice condition. An extremely displayable newspaper.

Category: The 1600's and 1700's
