NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, Jan. 3, 1846

* Texas statehood - joins the union
* Mormons - Mormonism - Emma Smith

December 29 is recorded as the date that Texas formally joined the Union, and this issue, under the heading: "Twenty-Ninth Congress", confirms this.
The subhead: "House of Representatives" includes a rather inconspicuous--yet very historic--report which reads: "Monday, Dec. 29 - Texas.  The joining resolution admitting Texas into the Union, was reported by the private secretary of the president to have received his signature."
This issue also includes a passionate letter signed: Emma Smith, the widow of Mormon leader Joseph Smith, datelined from Nauvoo, Illinois, Nov. 20, 1845. A portion includes: "...urging the Mormon people to remove to the Pacific ocean & advocating the cause of the tyrants, who have seized on the government of the Mormon church. This church, such as it is, was formed by my lamented husband who was martyred for its sake, and whether true or false, has laid down his life for its belief! I am left here, sir, with a family of children to attend to..." with more.
More Mormon content is on the back page with mention that: "...have found twelve indictments against prominent members of the Mormon church for counterfeiting the coin of the United States...Brigham Young and Orson Pratt are implicated & indicted & the prophet Joe Smith, it is alleged, used to work with his own hands at manufacturing those counterfeits..." with more.
Sixteen pages, 8 3/4 by 12 inches, very nice condition.
