On Billy the Kid's death in almost a "hometown" newspaper...

Item # 689457

July 23, 1881

THE LAS VEGAS DAILY OPTIC, New Mexico, July 23, 1881

* Outlaw Billy the Kid shot dead
* Pat Garrett - Old West lawman
* In a area publication, very rare

This was essentially the "backyard" of the famed outlaw Billy the Kid, so it is significant that there are two articles concerning his recent death (killed by Pat Garrett on July 14 in nearby Fort Sumner, New Mexico).
The top of page 3 begins with a great quip: "'A corner in Hell Filled' is the head-line with which the Tombstone Nugget announces the death of 'Billy the Kid'."
Also on page 2 is a terrific--and uncommonly lengthy report noting: "The Kansas City Start has a delectable obituary writer. Hear him: 'The most eminent citizen of New Mexico has just died, and the Territory mourns the loss of one who has given it such celebrity and achieved such brilliant success in his particular line. Reference is had to Mr. William Bonney, a gentleman who was, perhaps, better known to the general public as 'Billy the Kid'. Although he had not attained his majority, Mr. Bonney had acquired great reputation by his remarkable skill with fire arms. This many accomplishments is held in great admiration in New Mexico, which accounts largely for 'Billy's' remarkable popularity. No less than 18 citizens of the Territory succumbed to his prowess, and, if he had not been cut off in his youth, and at tee very threshold of his career, he would certainly have increased the list indefinitely. Mr. Bonney leaves behind a large circle of admirers to mourn his early demise and his name and memory will be affectionately cherished by all who appreciate fine art in murder, and long for a revival of brigandage."
It is also quite rare to find period mentions of his presumed real name, William Bonney.
The back page has a very brief item: "Pat Garrett has been mentioned in connection with the East Side police fiasco."
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, great condition.
Great to have this article on the front page. Four pages, very nice condition.
