Harriet Beecher Stowe takes England by storm - original London reports...

THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, England, a 3 issue set: April 30, May 14, & June 25, 1853  The first publication of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, initially released in America, occurred in two volumes in March of 1852, with the London edition following on its heels in May.
The British response was astounding, and by the Fall of the year Stowe was a household name throughout London.
This set reports on her visit to London, her attendance at Stafford House, an award presentation held in her honor in London, and considerable details about her life.
While the majority of the coverage is textual, her portrait and an image of her award are both included.
Each issue is complete in 16 pages, very nice condition.

Note: Most are aware "Uncle Tom's Cabin", upon its release, was embraced by abolitionists but enraged most of those from the South and Northern supporters of slavery. However, few are aware that it was exceeding popular in England. The first London edition appearing in May, 1852, which sold over 200,000 copies, an amazing number for the era.
