THE SUN, New York, Jan 24, 1834 This title is quite famous as the very first American "penny newspaper" having begun the year prior. Small in size and offered for just a penny, it appealed to the common man.
The back page has a curious item on Davy Crockett, at that time a member of U.S. Congress: "Soon after Col. Crocket's first appearance at Washington, being a new member from Tennessee, he arrived at the palace by invitation of the President. The Colonel lived over the mountain & champagne and olives were quite new to him: but he however soon got a taste of them. 'Mr. President', said the Colonel, 'I like your cider very much, but I wish I may be shot (taking an olive from his mouth) if I can eat your pickles.' ".
