February 21, 1834

THE SUN, New York, Feb. 21, 1834  Perhaps most famous as the very first American 'penny newspaper" which started the year prior. Small in size and offered for just a penny, it appealed to the common man.
Most of the back page is taken up with: "Preface of the Hon. David Crockett's Biography" which is a lengthy article signed at its conclusion: "David Crockett, Washington City, Feb. 1st, 1834".
Davy Crockett was a member of the U.S. Congress at this time but he would lose out in 1835, prompting his angry departure to Texas shortly thereafter. In early 1836 he took part in the Texas Revolution and died at the Battle of the Alamo.
Crockett became famous during his lifetime for larger-than-life exploits popularized by stage plays and almanacs. After his death, he continued to be credited with acts of mythical proportion. These led in the 20th century to television and film portrayals, and he became one of the best-known American folk heroes.
Great and uncommon to find a period article written by Davy Crockett.
Four pages, 9 by 11 3/4 inches, very nice condition.
