April 06, 1789

PENNSYLVANIA PACKET, Philadelphia, April 6, 1789  On this very day the votes for President were counted in the Senate, the result showing Washington was elected (not reported here).
Page 2 item from Boston notes that many men elected as federal representatives have declined the honor due to "private affairs". Also: "A Proclamation" for a day of fasting & prayer, signed in type: John Hancock.
Another page 2 report concerns the expected arrival of George Washington in New York for his inauguration, and the same for John Adams. And a report dated April 2 from New York notes: "It is expected a sufficient number of Senators will be arrived in a very few days, which will enable that most Honorable body to assemble for the dispatch of business." That would happen on April 6.
Then a note from New York that: "...a quorum of the House of Representatives of the United States assembled on Wednesday last & chose for their Speaker the honarable Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg...No other business was sone that day. Of the Senate, a sufficient number had not arrived."
Four pages, a bit irregular at the bottom margin, some non-archival mends near the margins, a few discrete archival mends.
