NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, May 24, 1828  Inside has: "The New Tariff" "An Act in Alteration of the Several Acts, Imposing Duties on Imports" which takes nearly 2 pages & is signed in type by the President: John Quincy Adams.
"Tariff of 1828" was a protective tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern United States. It was labeled the "Tariff of Abominations" by its Southern detractors because of the effects it had on the antebellum Southern economy. Five years later would be the Tariff of 1833 which would be more agreeable to the Southern economy.
