May 30, 1846
NILES' NATIONAL REGISTER, Baltimore, May 30, 1846 The front page contains a great rarity for this title: a map of the Mexican War. And not one, but two.
The front page text is headed: "Seat Of War--Explanations" noting the various parts of the map and the latest action. Nearly 12 insides pages are taken up entirely with "War With Mexico" reports.
Over half of the back page is taken up with a great article on the westward expansion with fine reading on those heading overland to California. The article is headed: "For California, Ho!" and has a wealth of great content including much on the Mormons. A few bits include: "...an express to know something of the Mormons, who are crossing the Missouri river in great numbers at St. Joseph...at least two thousand have actually passed...well provided with all needful munitions of war...thinks that they have no hostile intentions towards us..." and more, and then: "...The Mormons are now fast leaving their possessions in Illinois...Families remaining are making preparations to go...The Mormon emigrants leave in companies of four to six and ten wagons..." and much more.
Sixteen pages, 8 3/4 by 12 inches, very nice condition.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
