* William Millerites - Millerism

The back page has an interesting report headed: "Millerism In Philadelphia" which is about the Millerites, followers of the teachings of William Miller, who in 1831 first shared publicly his belief that the Second Advent of Jesus Christ would occur in roughly the year 1843–1844. Coming during the Second Great Awakening, his beliefs were taken as predictions, spread widely, and believed by many, leading to the Great Disappointment.
The article notes: "...We regret to learn that the domestic concerns of several families...are disturbed by Millerism, that the property issuing wasted, and a comfortless age insured to some by a miserable, reliance on the part of the active members of the family, upon the assertion that the world will be destroyed next month. This strange infatuation is influencing all the conduct, and all the conversation, of the victims, and will probably result in settled insanity."
Millerite reports are rarely found in period newspapers.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, very nice condition.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
