* William Millerites - Millerism
The back page has an interesting report taking almost half a column headed: "Millerism" which is about the Millerites, followers of the teachings of William Miller, who in 1831 first shared publicly his belief that the Second Advent of Jesus Christ would occur in roughly the year 1843–1844. Coming during the Second Great Awakening, his beliefs were taken as predictions, spread widely, and believed by many, leading to the Great Disappointment.
The article begins: "The number of melancholy instances of infatuation of which accounts reach us, induced by the predictions of the near approach of the end of the world, are too serious to allow us to laugh, even at the ludicrous with which other accounts abound. A number of persons have actually committed suicide..." with more.
Millerite reports are rarely found in period newspapers, and this is one of the lengthier articles we have seen.
Sixteen pages, 8 1/2 by 12 inches, very nice condition.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
