11th hour, 11th day, 11th month... End of World War I...

Item # 685049

November 10, 1918

THE MARTIAN, France, Nov. 10, 1918

* Rare U.S. military camp publication
* World War I - WWI (day of armistice)

This is a little 4 page newspaper "Published by Organizations at Hospital Center, A.P.O. No. 780 American Expeditionary Forces" near Mars, France, hence the title.
This town became an American hospital complex near the end of WWI, meant to serve up to 40,000 people. Various news tidbits both relating to the war and not.
Keeping in mind that this issue is dated the day before WWI ended, the most intriguing content is the hand penned note that a soldier wrote for those back home. Written in the back page margins, the write exchanges some pleasantries about a birthday dinner, etc., but concludes with a very historical note--and terrific to have in this period newspaper. He concludes with: "...Hurrah, Peace to-morrow. 11 o'clock, 11th day, 11th month, 11 - 11 - 11. Love to all, Albert Coons."
Four pages, 9 1/4 by 12 1/4 inches, minor margin tears, a few discrete archival mends at margins, good condition.
