NEW YORK HERALD, Sept. 22, 1865  Front page column heads include: "THE WIRZ TRIAL" "Another Chapter of Brutality and Horrors" "Howell Cobb Desired to Hang All the Yankee Prisoners" "Suggested Punishment for the Georgia Ladies who Collected Supplies for the Sufferers" "Wirz & the Winders Proposed to Place Them All in a House of Prostitution" and more. Page 4 has an editorial on the Wirz trial.
Henry Wirz was a Confederate Army officer during the Civil War. He was the commandant of Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp in Georgia, where nearly 13,000 Union Army prisoners of war died as a result of inhumane conditions. After the war, Wirz was tried and executed for conspiracy and murder relating to his command of the camp. This made the captain the highest-ranking soldier and only officer of the Confederate Army to be sentenced to death for crimes during their service.
Page 5 has a lengthy "Obituary" "Death of the Widow of 'Don't Give Up The Ship' Lawrence", Julia Montaudevert, widow of Captain James Lawrence.
Eight pages, nice condition.
