The murder case sensation of the day...

Item # 684389

July 14, 1850

DAILY DELTA, New Orleans, Louisiana, July 14, 1850

* Rare deep South publication
* John White Webster murder case
* George Parkman Boston killing

Over two columns of the front page are taken up with reports on the Parkman-Webster murder case
After Boston businessman George Parkman disappeared in November 1849, his dismembered and partially burned body was found in the laboratory of John Webster, a lecturer at Harvard Medical College. Webster was convicted of Parkman's murder and hanged. The case was highly publicized because of its gruesome nature and the high social status of Parkman and Webster. The case was one of the earliest in which forensic evidence was used to identify a body.
The report is headed: "The Confession of Professor Webster" which takes most of the article, but also includes: "Webster's Petition for Pardon".
Being from antebellum New Orleans perhaps not surprising that pages 2 and 3 contain 3 reward ads for runaway slaves.
Four pages, a bit irregular at the blank spine, small old mend above the masthead, generally good condition.
