Page 3 has half a column with a report on the first telegraphic transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, headed: "Telegraphic Correspondence" "The Triumph Complete!--The Queen's Message To The President of the United States And The President's Reply".
The article begins: "Europe and America are now united by telegraph. Glory to God in the highest; on earth peace and good will towards men!"
The the Queen's message to Buchanan reads: "Her Majesty desires to congratulate the President upon the successful completion of the great international work, in which the Queen has taken the deepest interest." This is followed by: "The President's Reply" from Washington, to Queen Victoria. Other related reports as well, including a lengthy editorial headed: "The Great Consummation!"
But alas, the celebration would not last long as just a month later the cable would fail. It would not be for another 8 years that a successful telegraphic cable would join the U.S. and Europe.
Four pages, archivally rejoined at the spine, a few discrete archival mends at the central fold, very nice condition.
