A baseball team in uniform...
Item # 683405
May 14, 1881
HARPER'S WEEKLY, New York, May 14, 1881
* Early baseball team illustration
The full front page is a Thomas Nast political cartoon: "Is There To Be A Power Behind The Throne?"
But the most significant print would be the very nice half page baseball print: "The Princeton College Base-Ball Nine" showing them in uniform and with bats, a ball, and two catcher's masks. There is also a related article: "The Princeton Nine".
Other prints in this issue as well but they pale in comparison to the nice baseball print.
The complete 16 page issue, various chipping at the margins with several margin tears, some discretely & archivally repaired. The baseball print is in fine condition.
background: The May 14, 1881 issue of Harper’s Weekly featured an engraved portrait of the Princeton College baseball team, showcasing the players in early baseball uniforms posed formally on campus. This engraving captures the growing prominence of collegiate athletics in the late 19th century and provides a valuable visual record of Princeton’s team, reflecting both the era’s sports culture and the fashion of baseball gear at the time.
