HARPER'S WEEKLY, New York, July 25, 1874
* Early baseball team print
* Old West street scene
Although this issue includes many very nice & displayable prints, by far the most desirable would be the great full page captioned: "International Base-Ball -- The Philadelphia Athletics" which shows individual, full-figure illustrations of the baseball players in uniform, most with a bat or ball in hand. A very displayable item for any baseball collector.
The full ftpg. print is by the famed Frenzeny & Tavernier, captioned: "A Saturday Noon In A Southwestern Town" showing a typical Old West street scene.
Other prints within include a fullpg. Thomas Nast political cartoon: "Moses Junior Viewing the Promised Land From Mount Ruin"; and a halfpg: "The New York Normal College" & a smaller print of "Professor Thomas Hunter, President of the Normal College".
Complete in 16 page, minor spine wear, very nice condition.
Note: The July 25, 1874, issue of Harper’s Weekly features a notable full-page wood engraving titled "International Base-Ball -- The Philadelphia Athletics". This illustration showcases individual, full-figure portraits of the Philadelphia Athletics baseball players in uniform, many holding bats or balls. It's a highly regarded piece among baseball historians and collectors, capturing the early professional era of the sport.
This engraving was published shortly before the Athletics' historic tour of England in 1874, where they played against teams like the Boston Red Stockings. The illustration was based on photographs by Suddards & Fennemore of Philadelphia, and includes prominent players such as Cap Anson and Ezra Sutton.
