AI notes: In February 1865, Confederate forces evacuated Charleston, South Carolina, as Union General William T. Sherman's troops advanced through the Carolinas. The Confederates withdrew, setting fires and destroying supplies to prevent their capture. Union forces entered the city the next day, and the U.S. flag was raised over Fort Sumter, symbolizing the nearing end of the Civil War and reclaiming the site where the conflict had begun in 1861. Charleston’s fall marked a major symbolic and strategic victory for the Union.
