background: On February 5, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis addressed the Confederate Congress following the failed Hampton Roads peace conference with Union officials. In his message, Davis reaffirmed the South’s commitment to independence, rejecting the Union’s terms, which required reunion and the abolition of slavery. He argued that the North's conditions amounted to subjugation and insisted that the Confederacy must continue fighting to preserve its honor, liberty, and way of life. The address, delivered just one day before February 6, served as a final, defiant stand for Southern independence despite the Confederacy’s rapidly deteriorating military and political situation.
