THE WORLD, New York, Feb. 2, 1865 * Abolitionist John Rock "black is beautiful * First African American admitted to practice law * Supreme Court of the United States Formatted very much like its competitors, the Times, Tribune & Herald. Page 4 has a very notable report: "A Negro Admitted to Practice in the U.S. Supreme Court" which has a subhead: "Negro Equality in Washington" and noting: "John Rock, of Boston, a colored lawyer...was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court to-day...This is; the first case where a negro was ever admitted to practice in that court. Soon after being admitted to the bar, he had to go to the provost-marshal to get a pass to leave the city--a military order preventing any negro from leaving without a permit." Also on page 4: "GEORGIA" "Daring Attempt to Burn the City of Savannah" "General Meade's Appointment as Major-General Confirmed" and more. Eight pages, very nice condition.
