Death of President Zachary Taylor...

Item # 682924

July 11, 1850

NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., July 11, 1850

* Death of President Zachary Taylor
* Best publication to be had ? (rare)

All four pages have black mourning rules for the death of President Zachary Taylor. He was just the second President to die in office.
The report is at the top of the front page begins: "Weep, fellow citizens! The hand of Death has stricken down a great and good man! ZACHARY TAYLOR, our honored and beloved President, is no more!..." with more, including Taylor's final words: "...I am not afraid to die; I have done my duty; my only regret is leaving those who are dear to me."
Page 2 has many letters signed by Vice President Millard Fillmore concerning the death of Taylor, with additional reports and editorial comment on page 3. Also of interest is a back page report from the House dated July 9 headed: "The President's Illness" notes: "Mr. Bayly said that he understood that information had been received at the Capitol that the President of the United States could not survive an house...". He would die that day.
Nice to have this report in a newspaper from the federal capital, where he died.
Four pages, very nice condition.
