background: The Battle of Rutherford’s Farm, fought on July 20, 1864, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, was a small but strategically important engagement during the Valley Campaigns of 1864. Union forces under Brigadier General William W. Averell launched a surprise attack against Confederate troops commanded by Major General Stephen D. Ramseur, who were part of Jubal Early’s army. Averell skillfully used a combination of cavalry and infantry to outflank and pressure the Confederate positions, forcing Ramseur to retreat toward Berryville and delaying Early’s movements in the northern Valley. The Union victory was relatively modest in terms of casualties—approximately 113 for the Union and 250 for the Confederates—but it disrupted Confederate operations, bolstered Union control of the region, and set the stage for Philip Sheridan’s subsequent campaigns that would ultimately neutralize Early’s threat to Washington, D.C.
