Confederate newspaper...Sherman advancing towards Columbia...

Item # 681741

October 31, 1864

THE DAILY SOUTHERN GUARDIAN, Columbia, South Carolina, Oct. 31, 1864

* Rare Confederate publication

A rather rare title and great that it includes the word “Southern”.
The front page is mostly taken up with ads & military notices but there are also: "The Capture & Destruction of the New York Steamer Roanoke" "The War in the Southwest - From Mobile" "The St. Albans Raid" "Proclamation Appointing a Day For Public Worship" which is signed in type: Jefferson Davis.
The back page has over a column taken up with: "Correspondence Between Generals Lee and Grant Relative to the Treatment of Negro Soldiers & the Retaliatory Measure of Gen. Butler" which has a letter signed by each: R. E. Lee, Gen'l, and U.S. Grant. Other war-related reports as well.
Complete as a single sheet issue with very wide, untrimmed margins. A very small library stamp above the masthead, one discrete mend at the middle, nice condition.
