Item # 681484

October 19, 1833

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER Baltimore, Oct. 19, 1833  Among the many articles are: "Festival of Vine Dressers"  "Steamboat Disasters" "Lander's Second Voyage Up the Niger"; a report from a  famous Indian language newspaper: "From the Cherokee Phoenix" "Stephen Girard's Will" which takes almost 4 pages.
Girard personally saved the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812, and became one of the wealthiest people in America, estimated to have been the fourth richest American of all time. Childless, he devoted much of his fortune to philanthropy, particularly the education and welfare of orphans. His legacy is still felt in his adopted home of Philadelphia.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
