July 10, 1914

THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, Boston, July 10, 1914

* Babe Ruth sold to Boston Red Sox
* Historic MLB report
* Major league baseball
* In a Boston publication (very rare)

A gem of a newspaper for any collector of baseball history. It contains, somewhat inconspicuously at the bottom of the sports page (page 16), a report of incredible significance: the purchase of Babe Ruth by the Boston Red Sox.
The report is fascinating for the relative insignificance it was considered in 1914. Babe Ruth was essentially an unknown in the world of baseball, and always terrific to find reports of the most notable people in history long before they would become a household name. And even more terrific to have this report in a Boston newspaper. It is doubtful newspaper reports on Babe Ruth could be found from an earlier date, or that this report would be found in newspapers of other cities.
The report is headed: "New Men For Red Sox" with the report reading: "President J.J. Lannin of the Boston American league baseball team has purchased Pitchers Ruth and Shore from the Baltimore club of the International league. Catcher Egan was also included in the deal."
A terrific issue and a foundation piece for any collector of Babe Ruth memorabilia. Since not all newspapers reported this, it is rarely found.
Complete in 18 pages, in very nice condition.
