Moon landing soon to occur... Ed Kennedy/Mary Jo Kopechne auto crash...

Item # 680268

July 20, 1969

NEW YORK TIMES, July 20, 1969

* Chappaquiddick Island accident
* Apollo 11 moon flight

Although the moon landing report, found in the following day's paper, was commonly saved by millions, few saved this report reporting the prelude to the historic event, and as such a great companion issue to the "Main On The Moon" issue.
The front page banner headline: "Astronauts Swing Into Moon Orbit in Preparation for Today's Landing" has related subheads including: "Crewmen Eager" "NASA Aides See No Obstacles in the Way of Touchdown". Also a large photo of the Sea of Tranquility where the module is expected to touch down.
The front page also has: "Woman Passenger Killed, Kennedy Unhurt in Crash" "Police Say Senator Wandered About in Shock After Care Plunged off Bridge on Island Near Martha's Vineyard".
This was the controversial accident in which Senator Edward Kennedy was driving and Mary Jo Kopechne was killed, and event which was overshadowed by the moon landing.
The complete first section with all its 60 pages. Toned, some wear at the fold & margins.
