April 15, 1865

NEW YORK WEEKLY DAY-BOOK CAUCASIAN, April 15, 1865

* General Robert E. Lee surrenders
* Battle of Appomattox Court House
* Dated the day Abraham Lincoln died

A decidedly racist newspaper which began well before the Civil War & lasted a few years after. As such their reporting on war events provide a contrasting perspective beyond most other Northern newspapers.
Not surprisingly, the report of the Lee's surrender to General Grant at Appomattox is relegated to page five: "Surrender of General Lee" "Terms Of The Capitulation" "Movements of Sherman Unknown" "Mr. Lincoln on Reconstruction" which includes the many correspondences b between Grant and Lee on the closing terms of the surrender.
Also two interesting editorials: "The Surrender of Gen. Lee" and: "Let Us Rejoice".
Interesting to have this notable event in this pro-Southern newspaper.
Eight pages, good condition.
