1906 Mount Vesuvius eruption... Naples...

Item # 679499

April 09, 1906

THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, April 9, 1906

* Mount Vesuvius eruption
* Naples, Italy

The front page has a banner headline: "HALF A MILLION PEOPLE FLEE FROM THEIR HOMES" with subheads. (see) Nice for display. Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 8 pages, a few small binding holes along the spine, two small library stamps within the masthead, generally very nice.

wikipedia notes: The eruption of 5 April 1906 killed more than 100 people and ejected the most lava ever recorded from a Vesuvian eruption. Italian authorities were preparing to hold the 1908 Summer Olympics when Mount Vesuvius violently erupted, devastating the city of Naples and surrounding comunes. Funds were diverted to reconstructing Naples, and a new site for the Olympics had to be found.
