Wonderful & early report on Sutter's Mill...

Item # 678392

June 21, 1844

NEW YORK AMERICAN, June 21, 1844

* Early Sutter's Mill report
* Pre gold rush - John Sutter

 Page 2 has one of those little gem reports collectors seek: very early mention of a name that would be notable years later.
There is mention of a letter which says in part: "...enclosing the following letter from Don Augustin Sutter, the Alcalde [magistrate in a Spanish town] of the new town of New Helvetia, situated on the river Sacramento, one of the branches of the San Francisco. Mr. Sutter is a Swiss, now a citizen of Mexico [California was a Mexican territory at the time], and obtained from the government a large tract of land on which he is establishing a town, having already a fort to protect him from the Indians. All parties by land from the Oregon, or from the United States to California, touch art his establishment first; most of the emigrants on land from the Starts since 1840 have settled near Mr. Sutter..." with a bit more.
And what follows is a wonderful--and quite rare--letter signed by: J. A. Sutter concerning Fremont's expedition.
Of course it was at John Sutter's mill [given name Don Augustin Sutter, translated to John] where gold was discovered in 1848.
Four pages, large folio size, archivally rejoined at the spine, minor margin tears, generally good condition.
