May 02, 1865

THE DAILY PROGRESS, Raleigh, North Carolina, May 2, 1865   Raleigh was one of the last major cities of the South to fall into the hands of Sherman, surrendering on April 13, 1865, just one day before Lincoln was assassinated.
A terrific front page report to have in this newspaper, with great detail on the surrender of Raleigh to the Yankees, in a Raleigh newspaper.
The first column heads include: "Northern News" "Occupation Of Raleigh" "Interesting Details of rthe March from Goldsboro" "SURRENDER OF THE CITY" "Pursuit of Johnston" with close to two columns of reporting on the news events dated April 14, the day after Raleigh surrendered (see various photos).
Also on the ftpg: "Georgia--Occupation of Macon--Capture of Howell...and G. W. Smith" and: "Union Meeting In Greene County" with more.
The back page includes: "Monument to the Late President" "Feeding Johnston's Army" "The People Moving" "JEFF  DAVIS EN ROUTE FOR TEXAS" "Gen. Echols and Basil Duke Go With Him" "Johnston's Army".
But perhaps the most notable report is: "BOOTH KILLED" "Harold, an Accomplice, Captured" "The Murderers". The news dispatch, taken from the New York Times reads: "J. Wilkes Booth and Harold were pursued to Garrett's Farm, near Port Royal, Md. they took refuge in a barn. the barn was fired. Booth was killed and Harold captured." Other details as well.
The bkpg. also has reports on Lincoln's funeral with: "Movements of the Funeral Cortege".
Great to have these reports in a "Confederate" newspaper.
Complete as a single sheet, folio size newspaper, very nice condition.
