THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, Jan. 2, 1864

* Kit Carson fights the Navajo Indians
* Colored soldiers in the Civil War

Among the front page first column stack of Civil War heads are: "DAWN OF ANOTHER YEAR" "Our Armies Quiescent" "The Fight on the Hiawassie" "Fatal Defeat of Gen. Wheeler's Cavalry" "The Union Case In Arkansas".
Additionally--and rather unusual--are ftpg. heads: " 'Kit Carson's' War in Navajo" "The Indians Everywhere Punished". This report begins the back page with: "Department of New Mexico" "Matters at Fort Canby--The Expedition Against the Navajoes--The Navajoes and Their Country--Kit Carson on the War Path".
The ftpg. has a brief item: "Congratulating Colored Troops" mentioning: "Gen. Hurlbut...issued his congratulatory order...to the Tennessee regiments of colored troops...highest terms of the bravery of the men & their officers, and comes to the sensible conclusion that colored men, if proper officered, will fight, and fight like demons, too."
Eight pages, great condition.
