The first successful magazine in the country...

Item # 674800

March 31, 1744

THE CHRISTIAN HISTORY, Boston, March 31, 1744  This was the first successful magazine in America although formatted unlike typical magazines. It was exclusively a chronicle of the Great Awakening in America, exclusively of secular news reports. It was preceded by just a few magazines which lasted but a couple of issues--one of which was by Ben Franklin. Even this title lasted but a few short years.
As the subtitle reads: "Containing Accounts of the Propagation & Revival of Religion in Great Britain & America", this 8 page magazine is almost entirely taken up with religious content from the "Great Awakening" period in American history. Eight pages, 4 3/4 by 8 inches, very nice condition.
A rare opportunity for an American periodical from such an early year. Included is a photocopy of the volume's title page which contains the Boston imprint.

AI notes: The Christian History was first published in 1743 in Boston by Thomas Prince, a prominent clergyman, and printed by Samuel Kneeland. It was among the earliest American periodicals devoted entirely to religious affairs and played a significant role in documenting the First Great Awakening, a series of religious revivals that swept through the American colonies in the 1730s and 1740s. The magazine reported on revival movements both in Europe and the colonies, providing theological reflections, accounts of conversions, and commentary on the spread of evangelical fervor. Although its original run was brief, lasting only about two years, The Christian History established an important precedent for religious journalism in America, emphasizing both historical documentation and the promotion of evangelical ideals. Its legacy continued centuries later when the Christian History Institute revived the title as Christian History Magazine in the 1980s and 2011, offering quarterly publications that explore church history, influential figures, and pivotal events in Christianity.
