THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, December, 1772 Among the articles within are: "A Short Account of the Several sorts of Organ used for Church Service" "Quakerism Defended against False Representations" as well as "Description of Rochester Cathedral" which a nice full page plate of it as well; and "An Account of Two New Tortoises" which are "...found in the southern rivers of America..." with a detailed description of it, among many other articles.Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" with the latest news reports of the day including over a column of reports under "American News" with datelines of Philadelphia, South Carolina, Virginia & Boston. The Phila. report notes: "...general Assembly met this day...continued Benjamin Franklin, Esq., agent for the Province..."; and Surinam reports a slave insurrection.
Included are both full pages plates called for, one of which is mentioned above.
Complete in 56 pages, full title/contents page with an engraving of St. John's Gate, 5 by 8 1/4 inches, great condition.
A very nice magazine from just before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content including news of the day, political reports, literary items, and other unusual tidbits. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
