May 23, 1859

NEW YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, May 23, 1859 This is an interesting issue, and an opportunity to own an original, 19th century newspaper containing an article written by Friedrich Engels, who along with Karl Marx became the most recognized communist revolutionaries of all time. Prior to becoming known for the political efforts, both men were foreign correspondents for the New York Tribune.

Page 4 has the approximately 1 1/3-column article: "THE FRUITS OF WAR", which is credited by "Articles by Marx in New York Daily Tribune" as having been written by Friedrich Engels. See images for portion. The issue has news of the day and period advertising throughout.

Complete in 8 pages and in good condition.

Background:  Both men spent most of their lives in exile, part of which was in London where they joined the Communist League. As noted in the website "The History Guide": "...during the first half of the 1850s the Marx family lived in poverty in a three room flat in the Soho quarter of London. Marx and Jenny already had four children and two more were to follow. Marx's major source of income at this time was Engels who was trying a steadily increasing income from the family business in Manchester. This was supplemented by weekly articles written as a foreign correspondent for the New York Daily Tribune ."
