MERCURIUS AULICUS, Communicating the Intelligence and affaires of the Court, to the rest of the Kingdome. (Oxford), the fifteenth Weeke, (1643). This is a very early newsbook. Newsbooks were the predecessors of today's newspapers, being somewhat of a transitional item between pamphlets & newspapers, but defined specifically as periodicals by having a set period of issuance, being consecutively numbered, and dated on a regular interval.
Being from the English Civil War period it is not surprising that much of the content within is of a military theme. There is much nice content in this issue, too much to note here so the complete text of this issue can be seen in the photos. However I will note that one mage makes reference to the Battle of Edgehill, the first pitched battle of the English Civil War, mentioning: "...A tale as manifestly true as that Prince Rupert plundered Burmingham before the battaile at Edgehill and got there so much money and plate as payed his army; and that the rebels issuing out of Manchester had beat the Earle of Derby not farre from Wigan...tooke 1500 of his men, 1000 armes, many peeces of ordinance..." with more.
This issue is complete in 12 pages, measures 5 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches and is in very condition with a bit of damp staining to the upper right. Note that the Oxford imprint and the year of publication is lacking in this issue. However included is a photocopy of the issue of the "fifth Weeke" which has the imprint included, noting 1642 (would be 1643 by today's calendar).
