March 17, 1888

THE OLD CAPITOL, Columbia, Texas, March 17, 1888  Yes, Columbia--now known as West Columbia--was the first formal capital of Texas, established in 1836. A quite rare title which existed for less than 2 years. Only one institution has a substantial holding of this title and  its file is not complete.
The content is primarily concerning Texas, with a wealth of ads as well. But the front page features an article: "SULLIVAN" "Thirty-Nine Rounds Fought With Mitchell Thirty-Two Miles from Paris" "Both Fighters Terribly Punished & the Contest Declared a Draw".
Included as well is a single sheet: "Supplement Of The 'Old Capitol' " of the same date, smaller size. It concerns "Notice of Tax Sale".
Four pages, evenly toned, 19 1/4 by 12 1/4 inches, archivally rejoined at the spine nice condition. Slightly fragile so it should be handled carefully.
