October 28, 1778

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Oct. 28, 1778  This is simply a terrific issue, not only because the entire front page is taken up with American news, but because the report is General Robert Pigot's own account of the battle of Rhode Island, and this coverage--as well as other war coverage--takes not only all of page one but also all of pages 2, 3 , 4, 5, and 6.
Plus, there is so much American news that a 4 page "Supplement" issue was required as well.
The front page begins with a letter signed in type by: H. Clinton, with some references to the battle or Rhode Island, but he notes: "...letter from lord Howe, enclosing one from major-general Pigot by which I was informed that the French fleet had quitted Rhode island but that the rebels were still there in great force...For particulars I must beg leave to refer your lordship to sir Rob. Pigot's letter, a copy of which I have the honour to enclose..." and this is what follows and takes the remainder of the front page, headed: "Copy of a Letter from Major-general Pigot to Gen. Sir Henry Clinton, dated Newport, Rhode Island, Aug. 31, 1778" In this lengthy letter, which carries over to include over half of page 2 and is signed in type: R. Pigot, he details this significant battle fought on August 29. It concludes with the: "Return of the Killed, wounded and Missing...".
Following this is a letter from Major General Grey to Sir Henry Clinton.
It is very rare to find a single issue replete with so much content on the Revolutionary War. This is then followed by 3 more war letters, which also includes the: "Return of killed, wounded and missing..." from the naval encounter on the Accushnet River and: "At Falmouth in the Vineyard-sound the 10th of September, 1778" (see).
Following all this is more war reporting, including a lengthy letter signed in type by: Howe, datelined on the ship: "Eagle, Off Sandy-hook, Aug. 17, 1778", plus there is a letter from Captain Brisbane to Viscount Howe dated on the ship flora off Newport, R.I., followed by yet another letter from him, and then a 3rd and a 4th with dates leading up to the battle of Rhode Island.
We rarely find issues of this title with such extensive coverage of the Revolutionary War, particularly with a focus on a battle as significant as the Battle of Rhode Island.
Twelve pages, 7 3/4 by 12 inches, red tax stamp on the ftpg., nice condition.
