SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, Jan. 11, 1890 As we learn from the book "Kane's Famous First Facts", the patent for the back pedal brake, so common bicycles today, was issued on Dec. 24, 1889. The book notes: "Bicycle with a back pedal brake was patented on December 24, 1889 by Daniel C. Stover and William A. Hance of Freeport, Ill., who received patent No. 418,142."
This issue contains that notice. One of the back pages has an: "Index Of Inventions for which Letters Patent of the U.S. were Granted December 24, 1889" and one of the entries notes: "Bicycle, Stover & Hance.....418,142".
Also of interest is the great article, with three illustrations, of the Firth of Forth bridge, a modern wonder in its day as it was the longest cantilever bridge in the world. It still stands today with a detailed website relating to it. The ftpg. has a nice photo and article & inside has two more illustrations & continued text.
Sixteen pages, very nice condition.
