THE COLUMBIAN MAGAZINE, Philadelphia, March, 1789   The first 8 pages are taken up with: "A Concise History of the Late War In America" continued in a future issue. Also inside: "On the Duties of a Physician" which takes over 5 pages; "On the Requisites For Making a Man" "An Essay on Genius" and more. Near the back is: "The Chronicle" with the latest news of the day including 2 1/2 pages of news from the "United States" provided state by state. There are many reports of the representatives chosen by each of the states for the new federal congress (see); an item concerting the "state of Franklin", a report from Phila. that: "...the members of the senate & house of representatives of the United States, from this state, be authorized to make a respectful offer to congress of the use of any or all of the buildings in Philadelphia...and of the building lately erected on the state house square...in case congress should at any time incline to make choice of that city for the temporary residence of the federal government..." (see). The report from "Kentucky" notes: "...The proposed separation of Kentucky from Virginia and its independence as a fourteenth state...". the report from Georgia includes: "...The electors of a present and vice president of the United States gave a unanimous vote for general Washington...".
Both plates called for are lacking.

Complete in 64 pages (2 leaves in photocopy), full title/contents page, 5 by 8 inches, good condition.

This title has the honor of being the first successful American magazine, having begun in September, 1786 and lasting until December, 1792.
