April 20, 1861

NEW YORK HERALD, April 20, 1861  Front page heads at the top of the first column report the first casualties of the Civil War: "The War" "The Mass. Volunteers Opposed in Their Passage Through the City" "Bloody Fight Between the Soldiers and the Mob" "Two Soldiers and Seven Citizens Killed" "The Volunteers Succeed in Forcing Their Way Through" "Proclamation Of The President" & many more (see).
The key feature of this issue is a 5 3/4 by 9 inch engraving headed: "The Departure Of The Seventh Regiment - The Scene at the New Jersey Railroad Depot." There is a related report: "Off For The Wars".
Eight pages, an inconspicuous archival mend to the masthead (done on the reverse side), in generally very nice condition (see images).
